Glossary

Here is a short Glossary of website creation terms that this site uses. These definitions are not guaranteed to be 100% accurate but contain, what I believe, enough information to give you a basic understanding of the term.

  • Domain Name - An internet address such as www.yourname.com that links to a website on the internet.
  • Directory - A website that acts as a phonebook for internet sites. It is a listing of websites divided into categories
  • FTP (File Transfer Protocol) – Protocol which allows a user to upload files from your computer to a server. This transfer can be accomplished through the use of FTP programs such as FileZilla.
  • Incoming Links – a link to your website from another website
  • One-way links – Links from another site to yours without a link from your site to the other site.
  • Reciprocal links – Links from another site to yours with the condition that your site must link back to theirs.
  • Search Engine – Website such as Google or Yahoo which allows you to search all of the sites on the internet for information through the use of keywords and terms.
  • Server – A server is a very powerful computer that is always connected to the internet and ‘serves’ (or makes available) files and websites to users.
  • Sub-Domain - A domain name that is provided by a site that already has a domain. (i.e. www.yourname.freemoney4teens.com
  • Text Advertising – Being paid to place a text link to another site on your site
  • Uploading – Using a FTP program or File manager to copy files from your computer onto a server or other computer.
  • Website Hosting - Service provided by a web hosting company which ‘serves’ your website files to the world. All of the files and components of your website must be stored on your Website Hosting Company’s server.
